About Hijri Calendar
The Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.
Key Facts:
- Based on moon sighting
- Started from Hijra (Migration) in 622 CE
- Used for Islamic religious observances
- Official in Saudi Arabia and many Muslim countries
- Days begin at sunset
The calendar begins with the month of Muharram and ends with Dhu al-Hijjah. Each month starts with the sighting of the new moon.
In Pakistan:
The Pakistan Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is responsible for moon sighting and announcing the beginning of Islamic months. Their announcements are followed nationwide for religious observances.

What is the Hijri Calendar?
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims worldwide to determine the dates of religious observances. It consists of 12 months based on the cycles of the moon, totaling approximately 354 or 355 days – about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar calendar.
Moon Sighting in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the beginning of each Islamic month is determined by the Pakistan Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This committee, consisting of religious scholars and astronomers, announces the sighting of the new moon (crescent) after sunset on the 29th day of each Islamic month. If the moon is sighted, the new month begins; if not, the current month completes 30 days.
Important Islamic Dates
The Hijri calendar marks several significant Islamic events including:
- 1st Muharram - Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year)
- 10th Muharram - Day of Ashura
- 12th Rabi' al-Awwal - Mawlid al-Nabi (Birth of Prophet Muhammad PBUH)
- 1st Ramadan - Beginning of Ramadan (month of fasting)
- 27th Ramadan - Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power)
- 1st Shawwal - Eid ul-Fitr
- 9th Dhu al-Hijjah - Day of Arafah
- 10th-13th Dhu al-Hijjah - Eid ul-Adha
How to Use This Calendar
Our interactive Hijri calendar displays both Gregorian and Islamic dates side by side. The current day is highlighted in green for easy identification. You can also view upcoming Islamic events and important dates announced by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Calendar Conversion
The Hijri calendar years are designated as AH (Anno Hegirae) which means "in the year of the Hijra". The current Islamic year is approximately 1445-1446 AH. Since the Islamic year is shorter than the Gregorian year, Islamic dates "move forward" about 11 days each Gregorian year.
Religious Significance
The Hijri calendar is essential for Muslims as it determines the timings of:
- Fasting during Ramadan
- Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha celebrations
- Hajj pilgrimage dates
- Islamic months of worship (like Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan)
- Special prayer nights (15th Sha'ban, Laylat al-Qadr)
